Southdown Babydoll

Southdown babydoll sheep originate from the ‘South Downs’ of Sussex England, they are the oldest of the ‘down’ sheep breeds (relatively short staples, covered faces, rarely darker colors, usually marked as ‘wool’ when appearing in yarn).

A fairly docile breed primarily raised for meat production. The Southdown babydoll fleece weighs, ~4-6 lbs./yr., with 2-3 inch staples in the micron range of 23 – 31 microns. Spinners usually find it best to card this short staple and spin to retain the airiness of the fibers.

For knitting, this breed is best for everyday use items such as mittens and sweaters, where a lofty and springy yarn is desired.
