Blue Spoon Farm

The Blue Spoon Farm is a small family farm dedicated to the humane production of sheep and goats primarily for meat. Our animals are treated as pets. Consequently they also act like pets.

Sustainable farming is practiced through the use of locally available resources. We limit the carbon footprint of the farm by buying locally grown grain and hay. We support our neighbors and in turn they support us. We incorporate the principles of permaculture into our plans as well as the rules of Holistic Management. The farm grew out of a pilot program for Beginning Women Farmers hosted by Holistic Management International. I was selected to participate and during my year of training I developed my farm plan, purchased property in 2010, and began my farmers journey.

In 2010 I selected Boer goats to start my farm. My pastures were full of burdock and other sticky weeds. In a few years my goats got the “”weeds”” under control, renovated the pastures and in about 2015 I added a Corriedale ewe, Saratoga, who was purchased with the winnings of a fundraising event at the Saratoga Springs Casino. And thus began my sheep flock. Ask me about it!

Our production does (girl goats) have been tested for common diseases such as Johnes, CL, and CAE as well as other nasties and found to be free of all. For many years the farm was lucky enough to have Dr. Mary Smith from Cornell University as our on farm veterinarian. My animals and I, by extension, participated in many Cornell studies.

In 2019 many changes took place on the farm and off. The farm was relocated to Odessa, NY. A reduction in the number of does (female goats) and ewes (female sheep) was necessary. It is 2022 and I am still looking for a permanent farm but happily residing in Odessa.

I hope that you will support the Blue Spoon Farm.
